Understand When You’re Eligible to Retire
Service Retirement (Regular Retirement)

Members may retire upon meeting the following minimum eligibility requirements, which vary slightly between general members and safety members and differ depending on tier.

General Members

Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3:
  • At age 50 or older with:
    •  5 or more years of service credit
    • AND 10 or more years of membership (at least 10 years must pass from your ACERA Date of Entry)
  • At any age with 30 or more years of service credit
  • At age 70 or older with any amount of service credit
Tier 4
  • At age 52 or older with 5 or more years of service credit
  • At age 70 or older with any amount of service credit

Safety Members

Tier 1 and Tier 2:
  • At age 50 or older with:
    • 5 or more years of service credit
    • AND 10 or more years of membership (at least 10 years must pass from your ACERA Date of Entry)
  • At any age with 20 or more years of service credit
  • At age 70 or older with any amount of service credit
Tier 4
  • At age 50 or older with 5 or more years of service credit
  • At age 70 or older with any amount of service credit

Service credit eligibility includes reciprocal service and most service purchases.

Eligibility for disability retirement differs from the regular (service) retirement.
