Pay Code Determination

UPDATE: ACERA has posted additional information pertaining to this news topic here: Employer Pay Codes.  Updated pay codes lists can found there as well, the hyperlinks to the pay code lists below have been disabled.

When calculating your retirement benefit, the law requires that ACERA use a formula which includes your compensation.  The compensation used is often a subset of all the compensation you have earned over the final average salary period (generally 12 months for Tier I and 36 months for Tier II).  For employees who became ACERA members prior to January 1, 2013, the term for the compensation included in retirement calculations is “compensation earnable.”  Due to passage of the California Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act and AB 197 (PEPRA), the term used for the compensation included in retirement calculations for new members (as defined in PEPRA generally as those who entered ACERA after January 1, 2013) is “pensionable compensation.”

The requirements of PEPRA mean ACERA is required to analyze the pay codes/pay items paid to members impacted by the change in law.  The documents linked below list all employer pay codes/pay items and state whether or not the pay codes/pay items have currently been deemed pensionable compensation, which impacts new members.

If you have questions about your pay codes/pay items, please consult the appropriate list below with your employer’s payroll manager, as your employer is best positioned to determine whether any of the pay codes/pay items listed below apply to your compensation package.
